Goethe-Institut Nigeria has announced the selected projects for its 2024/2025 Support & Connect initiative, an annual program aimed at nurturing creativity and promoting dialogue across disciplines. Among the winners is “An Amaka Igwe Retrospective”, a documentary project by filmmaker Dika Ofoma.
The documentary will explore the life and career of Amaka Igwe, a pivotal figure in Nollywood and Nigeria’s first notable female director. Renowned for her groundbreaking contributions to storytelling, Igwe’s works addressed pressing social issues while redefining the portrayal of women in film.
Ofoma, whose filmography includes socially reflective works like “A Quiet Monday” and “God’s Wife”, expressed his admiration for Igwe’s legacy. “Amaka Igwe saw storytelling as a tool for social change, and that’s why many of her films were themed around social issues. This documentary will celebrate her achievements and inspire a new generation of filmmakers,” he said.
The documentary will showcase Igwe’s iconic productions, including “Rattlesnake”, “Violated”, “Forgiveness”, and “To Live Again”. These films are celebrated not only for their artistic depth but also for their cultural and societal impact. Ofoma aims to highlight her role in reshaping Nigeria’s male-dominated film industry while encouraging purposeful filmmaking.
Further details about the project will be announced in the coming months. Ofoma recently premiered his latest film, God’s Wife, at the S16 Film Festival, further solidifying his reputation for delivering thought-provoking and critically acclaimed works
