Disney+’s animated miniseries “Iwájú” has been nominated for the NAACP Image Award for Outstanding Animated Series, recognizing its cultural significance and exceptional storytelling.
Created in collaboration with the Pan-African entertainment company Kugali Media, “Iwájú” stands out among its competitors, including Disney Jr’s “Ariel”, “Everybody Still Hates Chris”, “Gracie’s Corner”, and Marvel’s “Moon Girl and Devil Dinosaur”.
The series, which premiered on February 26, 2024, has been lauded for its 100% rating on Rotten Tomatoes.
Set in a futuristic Lagos, Nigeria, it follows a young girl and her best friend as they navigate their vibrant city, uncovering its many wonders. The narrative explores themes of family, inequality, and self-discovery, all through a sci-fi lens. The seamless integration of Nigerian languages—Yoruba, Pidgin, and English—adds depth and authenticity to the story, creating a dynamic cultural experience.
The show’s cultural impact has been widely praised by pop culture outlets for its effort to amplify African voices in animation. “Iwájú” recently received three nominations at the Children’s & Family Emmy Awards, further solidifying its place as a groundbreaking project in the industry.
Written by Olufikayo Adeola and Halima Hudson, “Iwájú” features a stellar voice cast, including Simisola Gbadamosi, Dayo Okeniyi, Femi Branch, Siji Soetan, and Weruche Opia. The show’s vibrant portrayal of Lagos and its compelling themes have contributed to its nomination at the prestigious NAACP Image Awards, which honor achievements by people of color in the arts and entertainment.
The 2025 NAACP Image Awards ceremony will take place on February 22, 2025, at the Pasadena Civic Center, with the event airing live on BET.
This year, Netflix’s “The Piano Lesson”, starring Samuel L. Jackson and John David Washington, leads the nominations with fourteen nods, including Outstanding Motion Picture. “The Million Dollar Heist” and “Fight Night” are also contenders, each dominating the television category with nine nominations.
In music, Glorilla, a Memphis native, has received six nominations, including Best New Artist. Public voting for the various categories is now open.
