The acclaimed Fame Shorts Film Festival has officially opened submissions for its 2025 edition, scheduled to take place from Sept. 4 to 6, 2025, at the historic Labia Theatre in Cape Town, South Africa.
Celebrated for its commitment to showcasing bold, thought-provoking short films, the festival is calling on all filmmakers and film enthusiasts across Africa and the diaspora to submit their works for consideration. This year’s program will feature an impressive showcase of stories that, according to the organizers, “delve into themes like cultural heritage, modern life, diasporic identity historical events, and pressing socio-political issues.”
Rooted in African identity, the film festival welcomes authentic African stories from filmmakers willing to go the distance to showcase their African origins and the multiplicity of African experiences and perspectives.
The categories for consideration at the festival are: Best Documentary Short Film, Best Narrative Short Film, Best Animated Short Film, Best Student Short Film, and Best LGBTQ+ Short Film.
In addition to its artistic aims, the FAME Shorts Film Festival 2025 will continue to promote environmental consciousness through its renewed partnership with Yes! Definitely, an innovative water bottling company known for its use of 100% recycled plastic bottles. This partnership aligns with the festival’s commitment to encouraging films that spotlight the numerous environmental concerns in Africa, along with pioneering sustainable solutions through storytelling.
Submissions end on Apr. 21, 2025. Filmmakers whose work is selected will receive notifications from Jun. 30, 2025. The selected films will feature at the prestigious FAME Week Africa in Cape Town.
