Niyi Akinmolayan has called out the way Nigerian cinema managers promote movies, accusing them of favouring certain films while sidelining others. The filmmaker on June 9, 2025, criticised the use of “random standees,” as he described them, to advertise films showing in cinemas.
Akinmolayan’s argument holds that the current cinema display system undermines the equality of films, particularly the potential of Nollywood films.
“I’ve said this to several cinema managers but they won’t listen…because we love chaos. Create ways to give all the films showing in your space equal attention (at least for Nollywood),” he wrote.

He suggested that Nigerian cinemas should create high signage that can split into eight big banners to give room for all current films.
“Change the display system. That way no one will feel cheated. Let people know the films currently showing and give them equal visibility,” he added.
Notably, Akinmolayan’s recent remarks reinforce Femi Branch’s earlier criticism in 2024, where the Nollywood actor also accused Nigerian cinema managers of showing bias.
