HBO has released the first trailer for Lanterns, its long-anticipated series and the third live-action project in the newly established DC Universe (DCU), but early reactions from fans have been mixed.
The two-minute, 10-second preview introduces Kyle Chandler as Hal Jordan and Aaron Pierre as Jon Stewart, who are shown investigating a murder in the American heartland.
Soon after the trailer’s release, some fans took to social media to question the limited presence of the franchise’s defining color green, as well as the absence of elaborate ring constructs commonly associated with the Green Lantern mythology.
Several viewers compared the visuals to the effects seen in the 2011 film Green Lantern and the ring constructs featured in 2021’s Zack Snyder’s Justice League.
HBO appeared to acknowledge the online discussion in a post on X, sharing a screenshot of a green food basket from the trailer with the caption: “What do you mean there’s no green?”
Lanterns has previously been described as a grounded detective story, a creative direction that differs from the cosmic scope typically associated with the Green Lantern comics.
The series’ reception may become clearer once more footage is released ahead of its premiere.
