John Amos, the American actor best known for his roles in “Coming to America” and the 1970s sitcom “Good Times”, has died at the age of 84. His son, Kelly Christopher Amos, confirmed the news in a statement on Tuesday, revealing that the veteran actor passed away from natural causes on August 21.
“It is with heartfelt sadness that I share with you that my father has transitioned,” Kelly Amos said in the statement. “He was a man with the kindest heart and a heart of gold, and he was loved all over the world.”
Born on December 27, 1939, in Newark, New Jersey, Amos initially pursued a career in sports. He played college football at Colorado State University and had a brief stint with the Kansas City Chiefs during the 1967 American Football League offseason. However, it was his talent for acting that eventually brought him into the spotlight.
Amos’s breakout role came as James Evans Sr., the strong-willed father in “Good Times”, a groundbreaking sitcom that aired from 1974 to 1979. His portrayal of the Evans family patriarch resonated with audiences across America, though his time on the show ended abruptly after three seasons due to creative differences.
The actor later enjoyed a resurgence in popularity with his portrayal of Cleo McDowell, the no-nonsense restaurant owner in Eddie Murphy’s “Coming to America” (1988) and its 2021 sequel.
In addition to his Hollywood career, Amos made an appearance in Nollywood, starring in the Nigerian comedy film “Christmas in Miami”, released in December 2021. Directed by Robert Peters, the film showcased Amos’s continued versatility and international appeal.
