Pixar’s latest original animation, Hoppers has beat industry projections with a colossal record-setting launch.

The film about a young scientist who uses experimental technology to transfer her consciousness into robotic animals in order to communicate with wildlife, grossed $46 million in its opening weekend domestically. This amounted to a post-pandemic best among original animations after ousting The Wild Robot ($35.8 million).

According to industry analyst Luiz Fernando, this is also the strongest Pixar debut for an original since Coco’s $50.8 million.

Internationally, the film earned $42 million in five days across 50-plus markets. The United Kingdom led overseas territories with $6.4 million, bringing the film to an $88 million global debut when combined with its domestic total.

For reference, the last time an original animation opened better worldwide was back in 2017 with Coco ($104.7 million).
