Nollywood filmmaker Biodun Stephen, known for her work in the romantic comedy genre, has responded to criticisms about how her films typically end.

Stephen, whose latest project, *I AM ANIS*, stars Shaffy Bello and tells a true-life story of rebellion, repercussions, and redemption, recently discussed her approach to storytelling in an interview with Max FM on March 24.

Addressing critiques about her film endings, the director of *Sista* (2022) and *A Simple Lie* (2021) stated that audiences often expect her stories to conclude in a particular way.

“I can decide to end it however I want, and that is how I choose to end it,” she said. “Sometimes when you want to criticize, you can focus on things like plot holes, but the storyline itself? That’s tricky.”

Stephen cited *Sista* as an example, recalling how some viewers took issue with Bisola Aiyeola’s character remaining calm after discovering her husband had another family. Defending her decision, she explained that many Nigerian women would react the same way, making the portrayal authentic.

“It does not mean that the film lacks integrity or authenticity,” she added.

On the subject of gender dynamics in Nollywood, Stephen noted that while the industry has long been male-dominated, there is now greater acceptance of women’s voices in filmmaking.
