It’s the biggest domestic and global debut for a Superman solo film
James Gunn’s “Superman,” the first theatrical release in the rebooted DC Universe, has opened to strong global numbers, earning $217 million in its debut weekend.
According to Deadline and box office analyst Luiz Fernando, the film grossed $122 million in North America and $95 million across 78 international markets.
This makes “Superman” the third film in 2025 to cross the $100 million mark at the U.S. box office, behind “A Minecraft Movie” ($162 million) and “Lilo and Stitch” ($146 million).
It also sets a new record as the highest opening for a Superman solo film, surpassing 2013’s “Man of Steel” ($112 million). It ranks second overall among Superman titles, following 2016’s “Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice” ($166 million+).
“Superman” now holds the sixth-biggest domestic opening for a DC property. Only “Batman v Superman,” “The Dark Knight Rises” ($160.9 million), “The Dark Knight” ($158 million), and “The Suicide Squad” ($133.7 million) opened higher.
Released on July 11, “Superman” is written, directed, and produced by James Gunn. The film stars David Corenswet as Clark Kent/Superman, Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane, and Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor. The cast also includes Nathan Fillion as Guy Gardner/Green Lantern and Edi Gathegi as Mr. Terrific, among others.
