Jeremiah Oluwajenyo, known as Jeremiah FJ Sax, has revealed new details about his rapid rise in an exclusive interview with The Nollywood Reporter.

It comes after the 13-year-old finished as first runner-up at De9jaspirit Talent Hunt Season 4, saying the experience “showed who I am as a saxophonist” and boosted his stage confidence.

Jeremiah, who went viral in October for his retro-themed performance of Sir Victor Uwaifo’s Joromi, said he never expected the video to attract the national attention it did. Judges also praised the young performer’s technique and composure, commending the maturity in his tone.

Speaking on the outcome of the competition, Jeremiah said he was not discouraged by missing the grand prize. “Winning doesn’t always mean getting the top prize. I still believe I’m a winner because of how much I grew,” he said.

Medical experts consulted for the interview noted that his breath control and lung capacity—unusual for his age—reflect years of consistent training. Professionals also say his phrasing and finger control signal discipline and strong foundational coaching.

Jeremiah confirmed he has trained under four key mentors: Shola Animashaun, Sunday Okpo, Muyiwa Williams and Jerry Omole. His influences range from jazz legends Charlie Parker to smooth jazz icons Kenny G, Dave Koz and Gerald Albright. He is also experimenting with bass guitar and keyboard as secondary instruments.

On his growing popularity, Jeremiah said his social media following rose from 15,000 to 100,000 within a month of the show’s broadcast. He describes the attention as motivating and says he now embraces the “rising star” label given to him by viewers and judges.

Looking ahead, the teenage musician hopes to collaborate with global jazz artists and Nigerian stars including Davido, Ayra Starr, Wizkid, Nathaniel Bassey and Dunsin Oyekan. With nine years of experience already behind him, Jeremiah says he is committed to exploring new techniques and styles as he continues his development.
