Joseph Kosinski’s reboot of Miami Vice is set to begin filming in June 2026, with Michael B. Jordan and Austin Butler confirmed in the lead roles. The film is being developed by Universal Pictures.
Shot for IMAX, the crime thriller is scheduled for a theatrical release on August 6, 2027. Kosinski, best known for Top Gun: Maverick and the recent racing drama F1, is directing the project.
According to Variety, the reboot will revisit the glamour and corruption of mid-1980s Miami, drawing inspiration from the pilot episode and early seasons of the original NBC series. Jordan will play Ricardo “Rico” Tubbs, while Butler takes on James “Sonny” Crockett.
The characters were originally portrayed by Philip Michael Thomas and Don Johnson in the television series, which ran for five seasons between 1984 and 1989 and became a major pop culture touchstone.
Kosinski’s version marks the second big-screen adaptation of Miami Vice, following the 2006 film starring Jamie Foxx and Colin Farrell.
The reboot is produced by Kosinski and Dylan Clark (The Batman), with a script developed by Eric Warren Singer and Dan Gilroy, based on characters created by Anthony Yerkovich.
