Iyabo Ojo’s Yoruba epic, “Labake Olododo,” has refused to bow to the pressure of newcomers — both local and foreign — at the box office.
In its second weekend in Nigerian cinemas (dated Apr. 4–Apr. 6), the movie earned another ₦45 million, a mere -10% drop from its solid ₦50.2 million opening. Not only did it top the charts by a ₦16 million margin in its second week, it’s cume at the time of this writing now stands at an impressive ₦172 million in less than two weeks.
Despite lukewarm reviews, “Labake Olododo” stood strong despite competition from Warner Bros.’s “A Minecraft Movie” and Kunle Afolayan’s psychological thriller “Recall.” The former movie was greeted in Nigeria with ₦9.4 million in its first three days in cinemas — a testament to the fact that the Nigerian audience aren’t the biggest “Minecraft” game fans — and the latter opened with ₦5.3 million.
Holding its ground in second place for the second consecutive weekend was Jason Statham and David Ayer’s action thriller “A Working Man,” which earned ₦29.3 million, reflecting a respectable -25% drop.
According to data published by Nigerian Box Office on X, the following are the Top 6 movies in Nigeria for the weekend of Apr. 4-Apr. 6.
