Warner Bros.’ “Minecraft” film has dominated its opening weekend, raking in $163 million from North America, with a global record of $313.7M.
“Minecraft,” reportedly produced with a $150M budget, made a record-breaking entry that surpassed the $162M opening weekend of Warner Bros.’ 2023 blockbuster, “Barbie.”
On April 7, “Minecraft” was announced as Warner Bros’ third biggest domestic debut of all time with its $163M earnings in its domestic opening weekend.
The movie stars Jason Momoa, Jack Black, Jennifer Coolidge, Danielle Brooks, Emma Myers and Sebastian Eugene Hansen.
It is based on the Mojang Studios video game of the same title. It follows four misfits who find themselves stuck in a bizarre wonderland. To get back home, they must master the reality of their new world and embark on a quest.
The movie, which was made in collaboration with Legendary Pictures, is said to have scored highest for a video game adaptation.
Its record also beats the $146.4 million three-day launch of Universal Pictures’ “The Super Mario Bros.” in 2023.
Amid the buzz of its feat, “Minecraft” came in tens of millions ahead of expectations as it was projected for $6M but opened with $163M.
