The death of Pope Francis on Easter Monday, April 21, has sparked renewed interest in the 2024 Netflix film “Conclave,” which dramatizes the selection process for a new leader of the Roman Catholic Church.

Directed by Edward Berger, known for “All Quiet on the Western Front,” the film is adapted from Robert Harris’ 2016 novel.

“Conclave” portrays the secretive and politically charged gathering of cardinals in the Sistine Chapel, where a new pope is elected. The storyline highlights internal tensions and power plays within the Church hierarchy.

Following news of the Pope’s death, the term “Conclave” trended on social media alongside “Pope Francis,” as global audiences sought insight into the Vatican’s succession process. In response to the surge in interest, the film’s producers expanded its availability to include rental and streaming options on Prime Video in the United States and other previously unreached markets.

Though the film ends with a twist that departs from expectations, critics have praised its overall authenticity. It received eight nominations at the 98th Academy Awards, including Best Picture and Best Actor for Ralph Fiennes, ultimately winning Best Screenplay.

The film stars Ralph Fiennes, Stanley Tucci, John Lithgow, and Isabella Rossellini.
