Matt Owens, co-showrunner and executive producer of Netflix’s live-action “One Piece”, has announced his departure from the series.
His exit comes as anticipation builds for the show’s second season, which recently wrapped production.
Announcing the news via Instagram on March 21, Owens reflected on his transformative journey with the project. He cited his mental health as the primary reason for stepping away, emphasizing the need to take a break.

“The last six years working on the live-action “One Piece” have been a life-changing journey and a dream come true. It’s also been a LOT. So I’m stepping off the Going Merry to take a break and focus on myself and my mental health.
Thank you so much to [creator Eiichiro] Oda, Shueisha, Tomorrow Studios, Netflix, and the entire cast and crew for your trust, partnership, and hard work,” he wrote.
Despite his departure, Owens has co-written at least one episode for season two, and his creative influence is expected to continue shaping the show’s future. Reports indicate that his exit will not impact the series’ chances of being renewed for a third season.
Meanwhile, Netflix has yet to announce an official release date for “One Piece” season two.
