The news of the former president’s passing on July 13 sparks mixed reactions online
Former Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari died on Saturday, July 13, 2025, at a London clinic after weeks in intensive care. He was 82.
The announcement of his death prompted a wave of reactions from public figures across Nigeria, including celebrities, entertainers, and media personalities—many of whom took to social media to reflect on his controversial legacy.
Veteran entertainer and activist Charly Boy, known for his longstanding criticism of Buhari, shared a blistering post on Instagram:
“See dis AI looking man. If true true dis na Buhari, God biko joor handle this man the way he handled all of us frustrated Nigerians. May Karma be his portion.”
The statement stirred debate, with some defending his candour and others accusing him of being insensitive.

Nollywood actress Jumoke Odetola took a subtler approach, writing:
“All of us someday one day — THE REALITY. May we fulfill our part and leave a good legacy behind.”
Though not naming Buhari directly, her post struck a more spiritual, reflective tone.
Arise TV journalist Rufai Oseni posted simply: “Sai Baba. Sai Buhari,” referencing the campaign slogan popularised by Buhari’s supporters. The short message sparked nostalgia among some followers and criticism from others.
Social media personality Bugzy Dvinci added a sarcastic note:
“Ex-President is gone. Chai. My Boo Boo Buhari wey Buharia Nigeria.”
Media commentator Daniel Regha was more direct in his criticism:
“Buhari’s govts made life difficult for Nigerians; we suffered in more ways than one, including me. That’s all I remember,” he wrote on X.

Former Big Brother Naija star Leo Da Silva focused on the political implications of Buhari’s death, noting it could shift electoral dynamics ahead of 2027.
“President Buhari’s passing could make the capture of the north a bit complex for the APC,” he wrote.

Media host Radiogad posted an open-ended prompt to his audience:
“Breaking News: Former President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria Muhammadu Buhari passes away in London… What are your thoughts on this?”
In response to the news, President Bola Tinubu has ordered Vice President Kashim Shettima to travel to the United Kingdom to accompany Buhari’s body back to Nigeria. The President also spoke with Aisha Buhari, the late leader’s widow, to offer his condolences. As part of the national mourning directive, all government buildings are to fly the Nigerian flag at half-mast.
Buhari, a former military head of state turned civilian president, remains one of Nigeria’s most debated figures. His passing has reignited discussions about leadership, legacy, and the impact of his administration—particularly among younger Nigerians affected by the years of his rule.
