The Nollywood thriller “The Weekend” has been selected to showcase at several prestigious international film festivals this fall.
The gripping family drama, produced by Trino Motion Pictures, will screen at the SLASH Film Festival in Austria, the Screamfest Horror Film Festival in Los Angeles, and the BFI London Film Festival.
The film will first premiere at the SLASH Film Festival, Austria’s leading event dedicated to fantastic cinema, which will run from September 19-29.
It will then travel to the United States, where it has been included in the lineup of the 24th Screamfest Horror Film Festival in Los Angeles from October 8-17.
The Weekend’s festival tour will culminate in London, where it has been chosen to participate in the esteemed 68th BFI London Film Festival from October 9-20. The LFF, presented in partnership with American Express, will feature a diverse selection of 253 titles from 79 countries, highlighting the breadth of global cinema.
Notably, “The Weekend” is the sole Nigerian film chosen to be a part of this year’s SLASH, Screamfest, and BFI London Film Festival lineups, showcasing the international significance of the production.
Directed by Daniel Oriahi and written by Egbemawei Dimiyei Sammy, Vanessa Kanu, and Freddie O Anyaegbunam Jr., “The Weekend” is a gripping thriller that delves into the complexities of family dynamics. The film follows the poignant story of an orphan whose yearning for family and deeper connections leads to an extraordinary weekend.
While the film’s selection at these prestigious festivals is a significant achievement, it has also found success at home. In Nigeria, “The Weekend” has secured the top spot as the number-one Nollywood film during its opening the week, grossing over eight million naira and continuing to attract domestic audiences.
Uche Okocha, the producer of “The Weekend,” expressed his pride in the film’s global recognition. “The journey of ‘The Weekend’ from Tribeca to Nigerian audiences has been extraordinary. I am particularly proud that we have the opportunity to represent Nollywood as the only Nigerian film at the SLASH, LFF, and Screamfest, and we are eager for it to captivate new viewers at both festivals,” he stated.
