RMD, Ayra Starr, Join “Children of Blood and Bone” Film Adaptation Cast Amid Casting Controversy

Paramount Pictures has expanded the cast of its highly anticipated “Children of Blood and Bone” adaptation, announcing the inclusion of Nigerian stars Richard Mofe-Damijo, RMD, Afrobeats singer Ayra Starr, Shamz Garuda (Pamilerin Ayodeji, Saniyya Sidney, Zackary Momoh, Kola Bodunde, and Temi Fagbenle.
They join an ensemble that already features Thuso Mbedu (The Woman King) as Zélie, Amandla Stenberg (The Hate U Give) as Princess Amari, Damson Idris (Snowfall) as Prince Inan, and Chiwetel Ejiofor (Doctor Strange) as King Saran.
Other major names attached to the project include Viola Davis, Cynthia Erivo, Idris Elba, Lashana Lynch, Diaana Babnicova, and Bukky Bakray.
The announcement follows backlash over the film’s initial casting, with fans questioning its commitment to cultural authenticity. The adaptation, directed by Gina Prince-Bythewood (The Woman King), is based on Tomi Adeyemi’s bestselling novel set in the mythical kingdom of Orïsha, where a young maji fights to restore magic after a brutal purge.
Filming is underway in South Africa and Kenya, with a scheduled release date of January 15, 2027.
