Director Ryan Coogler and actor Michael B. Jordan are officially in production on their upcoming feature film about Mansa Musa, the 14th-century emperor widely regarded as the wealthiest individual in recorded history.
First announced last year, the project has now moved into active development. It will trace Musa’s ascent to power and his famed 1324 pilgrimage to Mecca, a journey that cemented his global reputation and reshaped economic and political dynamics across regions he passed through.
Mansa Musa ruled the Mali Empire at the height of its prosperity, overseeing territories abundant in salt and gold. Historical accounts note that his stop in Cairo during the pilgrimage, accompanied by tens of thousands of followers and camels carrying gold introduced so much wealth into the local economy that the value of gold fluctuated for years.
Beyond his material influence, Musa was known for his devotion to Islam and his patronage of scholarship and the arts. His investments in learning transformed Timbuktu into an important centre of education and commerce. The film is expected to examine both his political power and his spiritual commitments, while highlighting his impact on African history and global cultural memory.
The project extends the long-standing creative partnership between Coogler and Jordan, whose previous collaborations include Creed, Black Panther, and Sinners.
With Coogler writing and directing and Jordan set to portray the emperor, the film aims to bring renewed attention to medieval West African empires and their historical significance. A release date has not yet been announced.
