Shall We Meet Tonight, a queer-focused short film co-produced by Bisi Alimi, won Best Picture at the 2026 Filmjoint Awards, where it also received Best African Film.

Speaking on February 7 while accepting the award, Alimi said the film’s recognition reflects the team’s decision to prioritise honesty in its storytelling.

“We chose truth over comfort. We believe that queer Nigerian lives are not just footnotes, scandals or side characters but full, complex human stories worthy of the big screen,” he said.

Alimi also reflected on his departure from Nollywood more than two decades ago, noting that his personal stories were once seen as unsuitable for the industry. He said the film’s reception challenges long-held assumptions that Nigerian audiences would not support queer-focused narratives.

According to him, the award signals a shift in how such stories are received and underscores the importance of filmmakers continuing to tell them despite resistance.

The producer encouraged emerging filmmakers to pursue bold ideas even when they face pushback. “Dreams do not require permission. They need courage,” he said.

Shall We Meet Tonight follows two women in southeastern Nigeria who fall in love and must decide whether to prioritise their relationship or their safety. The film was the most nominated title at the 2026 Filmjoint Awards.

Produced by Vengeance Productions, the short marks both the company’s debut and Alimi’s return to filmmaking after more than 20 years away from Nollywood.
