Showmax has announced the upcoming release of its new Nigerian Original drama series, “Princess on a Hill,” set to premiere in November 2024.

The announcement was made during the 2024 MIP Africa in Cape Town, a key event under Fame Week Africa, which celebrates African television, music, and film.

Co-created by Abiola Sobo and Africa Magic Viewers’ Choice Awards (AMVCA)-winning filmmaker Tolu Ajayi, “Princess on a Hill” is a compelling drama that delves into themes of power, ambition, and the cost of success.

The duo’s previous collaboration, “Over The Bridge, “premiered at the New York African Film Festival and earned 12 nominations at the AMVCAs, solidifying their reputation in the African film industry.

Set against the backdrop of corporate power struggles, the series follows the journey of Zara, played by Onyinye Odokoro (Slum King, Adire). Zara’s life takes a dramatic turn after she wins the prestigious Lawson Group’s Leading Ladies reality show. With her newfound fame, Zara faces the daunting task of saving the very company that propelled her into the spotlight. As she navigates the high-stakes world of business, she must contend with ruthless competition and power struggles.

Zara’s greatest challenge, however, comes from Moyosore Lawson, the enigmatic CEO portrayed by Bimbo Manue. Lawson is determined to see Zara fail, setting the stage for intense corporate battles. As Zara learns to stand her ground in a world dominated by manipulation and ambition, she fights to maintain her integrity and prove she is more than just a “Princess on a hill.”

Tolu Ajayi, co-creator of the series, describes “Princess on a Hill” as a modern African take on universal myths. “There’s that dreamlike quality we want to convey in this modern African iteration of a universal mythical experience,” Ajayi explains. “Business boardrooms as kingdoms, the wounded cruel king, strutting knights, conniving bishops, treacherous duchesses, the village belle turned warrior princess, and sometimes a touch of the village jester; all the familiar elements of a mythic tale.”

Co-creator Abiola Sobo adds, “Through relatable African characters, the series reveals the degradation of innocence and the deep desire for validation.”

“Princess on a Hill” features a star-studded cast including Efa Iwara, Ireti Doyle, Femi Jacobs, Andrew Bunting, Mimi Chaka, and Norbert Young.

The series is co-executive produced by Chuka Ejorh and Shayo Oke-Sobo, with Bibi Ukpo serving as the Head Writer.

Busola Tejumola, Executive Head, Content and Channels, West Africa at MultiChoice, emphasized the high production values of the series: “This is not your average boardroom drama. From the intricate details in set design to the meticulous editing process, every aspect of production is at the highest quality to ensure a rich African cinema experience. “Princess on a Hill” stays true to our mission of telling authentic Nigerian stories and showcasing creative talent in African film.”

With its compelling storyline and strong creative team, “Princess on a Hill” is set to make a significant impact when it premieres in November 2024.
