In an exclusive interview with The Nollywood Reporter, Taiwo Egunjobi opens up about the casting process for his latest thriller The Fire and the Moth, revealing why he chose actor Tayo Faniran to play the film’s lead, Saba.

For Egunjobi, the priority was to find someone who didn’t come with the baggage of previous roles. “I needed someone who could seamlessly blend into the world we were creating,” he says. Faniran’s connection to the setting was crucial: “Tayo’s background and natural link to the environment were key factors in the decision.”

Though Faniran wasn’t relatively a mainstream name at the time of production, his deep ties to Ibadan, where he grew up, made him an ideal fit. “Tayo and I share some personal history, which made it easier for him to connect with the world we wanted to build on screen,” Egunjobi explains.

Originally envisioned as a dark, sharp-tongued trickster, the character of Saba evolved significantly through Faniran’s performance. Instead of the fast-talking manipulator the script initially suggested, Faniran played Saba as emotionally repressed and grounded.

“Tayo’s interpretation was different from what we expected,” Egunjobi says. “We saw Saba as a charismatic trickster, but Tayo portrayed him as someone under immense pressure—less about jokes, more about survival.”

This shift in portrayal influenced the tone of the entire film. Rather than a flamboyant character study, The Fire and the Moth became a more intimate and realistic story about a man navigating a perilous world. Egunjobi believes Faniran’s performance brought unexpected depth, making Saba’s internal struggles more relatable.

Marking Egunjobi’s fourth entry into the thriller genre, The Fire and the Moth promises a gritty and emotionally grounded experience that pushes beyond the typical tropes. A release date is yet to be announced.
