HardFacts Studios has announced the upcoming premiere of The Bitter Feminist, a five-episode docudrama series exploring the struggles, stereotypes, and systemic oppression faced by women in Nigeria and sub-Saharan Africa.
The series will debut at the iRep festival in Lagos this March.
Co-created by Daniel Chukwuemeka and Ijeoma Chinonyerem, “The Bitter Feminist” tells the story of Ringret, a young woman from Northern Nigeria who survived rape and forced marriage. Her experiences serve as a lens through which the series examines feminism’s intersectionality and the broader fight for gender equality.
“This project is significant to us,” Chinonyerem stated. “It’s about giving voice to the women whose stories often go unheard and challenging the narratives perpetuating inequality. We hope “The Bitter Feminist” sparks conversations and inspires real change.”
The series features candid interviews and personal narratives from women who identify as feminists, highlighting their defiance of traditional gender roles.
Each episode tackles key social issues, including misogyny, child marriage, restrictive gender norms, consent, and transactional sex.
Directed by Priye Diri and produced by Isaac Newton Akah, “The Bitter Feminist” combines investigative storytelling with first-hand accounts to illuminate the cultural and institutional barriers that sustain gender oppression. The series also celebrates the resilience of women challenging these norms.
With its premiere at iRep Festival, “The Bitter Feminist” aims to ignite discourse on gender inequality and amplify the voices of women demanding change.
