HardFacts Studios’ docudrama “The Bitter Feminist” will make its official debut on March 29, 2025, at the iRep International Documentary Film Festival in Lagos. The five-episode series explores gender oppression and resistance in Nigeria and sub-Saharan Africa, using personal testimonies to challenge societal norms.
Created by Daniel Chukwuemeka and Ijeoma Chinonyerem, the series follows Ringret, a young woman from Northern Nigeria who survived rape and forced marriage. Her story serves as a lens through which the film examines feminism, resilience, and the systemic barriers women face.
Speaking about the project, Chinonyerem emphasized its importance:
“This project is significant to us. It’s about giving voice to the women whose stories often go unheard and challenging the narratives perpetuating inequality. We hope “The Bitter Feminist”sparks conversations and inspires real change.”
Directed by Priye Diri and produced by Isaac Newton Akah, the docudrama delves into themes such as misogyny, child marriage, restrictive gender roles, consent, and transactional sex. Through a mix of raw storytelling and expert interviews, it critically examines cultural and institutional structures while celebrating the resilience of women who push back against them.
Since its announcement, “The Bitter Feminist” has sparked discussions on gender justice, making its screening at iRep a significant moment for feminist discourse in Africa
. As the festival, themed “Freedom: Rights and Responsibility”, runs from March 27 to 30, the film’s premiere is expected to be a powerful contribution to the conversation on equity and resistance.
