The 31st edition of the New York African Film Festival (NYAFF) is set to get underway on May 8, with Tolu Ajayi’s “Over The Bridge” selected as this year’s Opening Night film.
The Nigerian drama will have its North American premiere at the Walter Reade Theater, setting the stage for the weeklong showcase of films from African and diaspora filmmakers. This year’s NYAFF is centered around the theme: “Convergence of Time.”
Directed by Ajayi, “Over The Bridge” is a captivating story that follows a man named Folarin who mysteriously disappears on his birthday while working on an important infrastructure project in Lagos. As the search for him unfolds, the film explores themes of mental health, purpose, corporate life, and the universal human struggle.
According to NYAFF Founder and Executive Director Mahen Bonetti, the long-running festival celebrates the origins of homegrown African cinema while also embracing its modern influences.
“This festival celebrates the origins of homegrown African and diaspora cinema while embracing their influence on modern masterpieces,” Bonetti stated about the 31st edition’s programming.
Launched in 1993, NYAFF has established itself as a prominent annual platform for spotlighting the unique storytelling voices and perspectives of filmmakers of African descent around the world.
Following the May 8 opening at Walter Reade Theater, NYAFF will continue through May 14 with screenings at the Elinor Bunin Munroe Film Center in New York City.
Film fans and festival attendees can secure tickets and learn more about the full NYAFF 2024 slate of features, shorts, panels, and other programming on the event’s website.
