The sci-fi sequel falls short of expectations despite topping the charts.
“Tron: Ares” Underperforms at the Box Office With $60.5M Launch
Warner Bros.’ science fiction film, Tron: Ares, is not off to a good start at the box office.
Initial industry forecasts had placed the film’s U.S. debut at around $45 million, later adjusted to $36 million following a tepid $14 million opening day. However, the final weekend tally was even lower: just $33.5 millionacross 4,000 theaters in North America, according to Variety.
Although this sat atop the domestic charts, it was less than that of the previous installment, Tron: Legacy, which opened to $44 million way back in 2010.
Abroad, the Jared Leto-led film didn’t perform much better. According to box office analyst Luiz Fernando, the film collected $26.7 million from 50 overseas markets, also below industry projections.
In Nigeria, Tron: Ares opened with ₦30.6 million, ahead of One Battle After Another’s ₦7 million for the week, but still below Gingerrr’s ₦49.3 million, per Nigerian Box Office.
With an $180 million production budget, Tron: Ares’ $60.5 million debut is certainly below the $85 million-ish debut Warner Bros., hoped for. It’s a stain in the studio’s already impressive track record this year.
