Universal Pictures has officially retitled the sequel to the Broadway musical adaptation “Wicked” as “Wicked: For Good”.Originally named “Wicked: Part Two”, the change pays homage to the iconic song “For Good,” which symbolizes the enduring friendship between the lead characters, Elphaba and Glinda. The film is set to premiere in theaters worldwide on Nov. 21, 2025.
Picking up after the pivotal performance of “Defying Gravity,” the sequel delves deeper into Elphaba and Glinda’s friendship, which will be further tested as they assume new identities—Elphaba as the Wicked Witch of the West and Glinda as the Good Witch of the South.
The decision to split “Wicked” into two parts reflects the filmmakers’ intent to capture the story’s depth, emphasizing the complex relationship between Elphaba and Glinda, the political dynamics of Oz, and the importance of doing justice to the beloved Broadway musical.
Cynthia Erivo, Ariana Grande, Jonathan Bailey, Ethan Slater, Bowen Yang, Peter Dinklage, Michelle Yeoh, and Jeff Goldblum will reprise their roles, with Jon M. Chu returning as director. Chu’s work on “Wicked” has garnered significant industry acclaim, including nominations for Best Director and Best Motion Picture at the Golden Globes and Critics Choice Awards. His efforts were recently recognized with Astra Awards wins for Best Director and Best Picture.
The first installment, “Wicked”, released on Nov. 21, 2024, has achieved remarkable commercial success, grossing $525.3 million globally. It now ranks as the second-highest-grossing musical adaptation and the eighth-highest-grossing film of 2024.
Beyond its box office performance, “Wicked” has made waves in the music industry. Its soundtrack, “Wicked: The Soundtrack“, debuted at number two on the Billboard 200, selling 139,000 units in its first week. Tracks like “Popular,” “Defying Gravity,” “What is This Feeling?” and “Dancing Through Life” charted on the Billboard 100, cementing the film’s cultural impact. This week, the album remains in the top ten, holding the number six spot.
