HBO has announced that Wizkid: Long Live Lagos will debut on December 11. The documentary follows global superstar Ayodeji Balogun, popularly known as Wizkid, as he prepares for his landmark performance at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in London.
Directed by Karam Gill, the film is part of HBO’s Music Box series created by Bill Simmons and will be available to stream on HBO Max. It first screened earlier this year at the Tribeca Film Festival.
The documentary traces Wizkid’s rise from Lagos to international recognition, highlighting how his career evolved at a time when Nigeria lacked formal music industry structures. It captures how his persistence and belief in his sound helped shift perceptions of African music globally. His Tottenham Hotspur Stadium performance marks him as the first African artist to headline the venue.
The film also examines the cultural links between Nigeria and the United Kingdom, touching on the history that shapes both regions and the ways digital platforms have expanded access to African music. Through interviews with fans and collaborators across Africa and London, the documentary explores how Wizkid’s work contributes to wider conversations about identity, culture, and representation.
Wizkid: Long Live Lagos extends the Music Box series’ focus on key moments in music, adding the artist’s story to its lineup of documentaries that look at how music intersects with culture around the world.
