Fans of “28 Years Later,” the threequel in the genre-defining zombie-horror trilogy, are gearing up for the film’s release on June 20, 2025.

Starring Jodie Comer, Cillian Murphy, Ralph Fiennes, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Alfie Williams and Jack O’Connell, the story picks up nearly three decades after the Rage virus devastated society.  A survivors’ team on a quarantined UK island ventures to the mainland, where they encounter new horrors—mutated infected (“Alphas”), cults, and brutal dangers.

It’s one of the most anticipated yet-to-be-released titles of the year—a line-up that includes DC’s “Superman” and Marvel Studios’ “The Fantastic Four: First Steps,/” and Disney’s “Avatar: Fire and Ash”—and for good reason. The first film, “28 Days Later” (2002) made $84 million at the box office on a $6 million production budget and the sequel, “28 Weeks Later” (2007), while less profitable, still managed to churn out $65 million against $15 million in costs. “28 Years Later” is the most expensive and ambitious of the bunch, costing Sony and Columbia Pictures a hefty $75 million.

Many of the creative forces behind the original are back on board: Danny Boyle has another go in the director’s chair, Alex Garland once again pens the script, and Anthony Dod Mantle returns for cinematography duty—bringing his gritty, immersive visual style into the age of evolved infected.

“28 Years Later” will host its European premiere on June 18, 2025 at the iconic Odeon Luxe Leicester Square in London. But the story doesn’t stop there: a fourth installment, titled “28 Years Later: The Bone Temple,” directed by Nia DaCosta, was filmed back-to-back with Boyle’s entry and is already deep into post-production.
