Phil Lord and Chris Miller’s $190 million-produced sci-fi adaptation is off to a historic launch at both the North American and international box offices.
According to box office analyst, Luiz Fernando, the film’s $80.6M million three-day domestic weekend not only topped the US market but displaced Godzilla x Kong’s $80 million as the ninth-biggest launch for any film in March and only the non-franchise title in the Top10.
Asides being the biggest opening of 2026, the film also set a new benchmark among original titles, beating I Am Legend’s $77.2 million to become the largest opening ever for a non-franchise film, trailing only Oppenheimer’s $82.4 million debut in that category.
The strong start also delivered a major milestone for Amazon MGM, with Project Hail Mary overtaking Creed III’s $58.4 million to become the studio’s biggest opening weekend since its formation.
Project Hail Mary also grossed $60.4 million in five days across 82 overseas markets, which is a record for Amazon MGM.The United Kingdom led all markets with $10.2 million, followed by China with $7.3 million.
With a production budget of $190 million, the film’s early global performance places it within striking distance of recent high-profile debuts such as Dune: Part Two ($182.5 million) and Oppenheimer ($180.5 million).
On IMAX, Project Hail Mary scored a $27.6 million global opening ($11.2 million overseas and $16.4 million at US BoxOffice).
Project Hail Mary follows a lone astronaut who wakes up in space with no memory and realizes he’s on a mission to save Earth from a global catastrophe. The film stars Ryan Gosling and is directed by Phil Lord and Christopher Miller.
