Nigeria’s premier music awards platform, the Headies, has confirmed that its 18th edition will be held in Toronto, Canada, marking another historic shift for the ceremony as it continues its global expansion.

The announcement was made on June 15, 2026, at the Grand Ballroom of Eko Hotel and Suites in Lagos during a high-profile unveiling ceremony held in partnership with the Academy Awards and the Canadian Embassy.

According to Ayo Animashaun, CEO of Smooth Promotions and HipTV, the organizers behind the awards, the decision to host the 2026 edition in Toronto reflects a strategic push to deepen the Headies’ global footprint while tapping into Canada’s large and vibrant Nigerian diaspora community.

This will be the third time in the awards’ history that the ceremony will be hosted outside Nigeria, following previous editions held in Atlanta, United States.

A 20-Year Journey of Nigerian Music Excellence

The 18th edition also coincides with a major milestone: the 20th anniversary of the Headies, which first launched in 2006 as the Hip Hop World Awards before rebranding to its current name.

Animashaun described the anniversary as a testament to the awards’ “resilience, consistency, and commitment” to celebrating excellence within Nigerian music, despite years of industry and structural challenges.

He added that taking the ceremony to Toronto is part of a broader vision to position Afrobeats and Nigerian music culture within global entertainment hubs where its audience continues to grow rapidly.

Government and Industry Collaboration

The event also featured remarks from Canada’s Deputy High Commissioner, Carlos Rojas-Arbulu, who welcomed the partnership and described it as a reflection of the rising global influence of Nigerian music.

He noted that Canada’s significant Nigerian community presents a strong cultural bridge, making Toronto an ideal host city for the landmark edition.

In preparation for the international event, the Headies Academy announced a travel partnership with Wakanow. The company’s CEO, Adebayo Lion Adedeji, stated that the initiative will support attendees with flight bookings, accommodation, airport transfers, and curated city experiences for visitors travelling to Canada.

Expanding the Ecosystem Beyond Music Awards

Beyond the ceremony itself, organizers also revealed plans for a creative and business summit to be held alongside the awards in Toronto. The summit is expected to bring together stakeholders from government, business, and the creative industry to explore collaboration and infrastructure development for Africa’s entertainment ecosystem.

Speaking at the event, Head of the Headies Academy, Oye Akindeinde, also announced a new membership structure for the Academy. The initiative will open participation to creatives, media professionals, and industry executives through a three-tier system designed to reflect experience and contribution to the entertainment space.

A panel session held during the unveiling featured Wakanow CEO Adebayo Lion Adedeji, MTN’s Head of Digital Aisha Mumuni, and Omnicom Media Group West and Central Africa Executive Director Yinka Adebayo. Discussions centred on the need for stronger private-sector collaboration to build trust, funding structures, and sustainable infrastructure within Nigeria’s creative industry.

Scheduled for October 25, 2026, the 18th Headies Awards will once again place Nigerian music on a global stage, this time in Toronto, reinforcing the awards’ evolving international identity while celebrating two decades of spotlighting African music excellence.
