Ryan Coogler’s “Sinners” isn’t slowing down. The vampire horror-thriller has had an even bigger second weekend in Nigerian cinemas, pulling in ₦106.8 million between Friday and Sunday, s slight increase from its ₦106 million opening.
That makes “Sinners” the first Hollywood film in Nigeria to grow in its second weekend without the help of a public holiday. It’s a rare feat in a market where most films tend to dip after opening. For context, other titles in cinemas over the same weekend saw major drops: “Owambe Thieves” fell by 43%, “Aso Ebi Diaries” by 35%, and “Makemation” by 50%.
The momentum wasn’t limited to Nigeria. In the U.S. and Canada, “Sinners” grossed $45 million in its second weekend, down just 4.9% from its debut. That’s the best second-weekend hold ever recorded for a horror film in North America.
So far, the film has earned ₦269.9 million in Nigeria, $123.2 million in North America, and $163.2 million worldwide.
At this pace, “Sinners” could end up becoming the highest-grossing film of the year in Nigeria, but it’ll have to beat “Captain America: Brave New World” and “Everybody Loves Jenifa” first.
