Universal Pictures’ The SuperMario Galaxy Movie has become the biggest film of 2026 with its $747 million cume at the global box office.

The video game-to-film adaptation achieved this by grossing a staggering $83 million in its third weekend in theaters worldwide, composed of $35 million in North America (topping the market for the third weekend in a row) and $45 million across over 80 markets (inclusive of $2 million in China).

The additional $83 million was enough to displace China’s Pegasus 3 ($649 million) as the highest-grossing film of the year and beat Spider-Man: Across The Spiderverse ($690.8 million) as the ninth highest-grossing animation Post-Covid.

Already the film with the biggest opening of 2026, analysts such as Luiz Fernando predict it to become the first billion-dollar grosser of the year (and $800 million as soon as next weekend), with the addition of the Korean and Japanese markets in the coming week.

However, it looks increasingly likely that Mario and Luigi will top the $1.3 billion run of predecessor, The Super Mario Brothers Movie.
