HBO has unveiled a first look at “A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms,” the highly anticipated spinoff series from the “Game of Thrones” universe. Based on George R.R. Martin’s beloved “Dunk and Egg” novellas, the series is set to premiere in 2025.
It is set roughly 100 years before the events of “Game of Thrones” and 100 years after those of “House of the Dragon.” During this time, the Targaryen dynasty and its dragons are still in full control of the Iron Throne.
A six-second teaser revealed Ser Duncan the Tall, the titular knight played by Peter Claffey and his squire Aegon V Targaryen, played by Dexter Sol Ansell—both referred to as “Dunk” and “Egg.”
Per R.R. Martin’s books, Dunk and Egg first cross paths at a tournament in Ashford Meadow, eventually traversing Dorne and emerging as Lord Commander of the King’s guard and King of the Westeros’ Seven Kingdoms, respectively.
HBO has planned a three-season arc for the series, with each season expected to cover one of the novellas: “The Hedge Knight,” “The Sworn Sword,” and “The Mystery Knight.” Season 1 will comprise six episodes.
Starring alongside Peter Claffey and Dexter Sol Ansell are Sam Spruell as Maekar Targaryen, Egg’s father; Finn Bennet as Aerion Targaryen, Egg’s older brother, Bernie Carvel as Prince Baelor Targaryen, Maekar’s older brother; Daniel Ings as Lyonel Baratheon; Tanzyn Crawford as Tanselle, and Abigail O’Regan, Steven Calvert and Rowan Robinson in undisclosed roles.
The concurrent running of “A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms” and the ongoing “House of the Dragon” indicates that Westerosi fans will not have to wait till 2026 for Season 3 to explore the rich lore of R.R. Martin’s world.
