James Cameron’s world of Avatar continues to expand, as the epic sci-fi saga prepares to welcome its third chapter. Avatar: Fire and Ash makes its way to cinemas this month, arriving three years after the release of Avatar: The Way of Water. The film will open internationally on December 19, 2025.
A direct sequel to The Way of Water, Fire and Ash follows Jake and Neytiri as they confront new battles after the death of their son, Neteyam. With the arrival of a new clan, the return of old enemies, and a conflict approaching breaking point, the couple must navigate these escalating challenges with their family beside them.
Most of the cast from the first Avatar film and The Way of Water reprise their roles, meaning Sam Worthington, Zoe Saldana, Stephen Lang, Sigourney Weaver, Joel David Moore, Kate Winslet, CCH Pounder and the rest of the ensemble are all returning. The only major new addition is Game of Thrones alum Oona Chaplin, who plays a pivotal character expected to shift the course of the story.
Cameron returns to direct, co-writing the script with Rick Jaffa and Amanda Silver, as they did on The Way of Water. The trio will also write the fourth and fifth Avatar films, set for release in 2029 and 2031 respectively. Cameron and long-time collaborator Jon Landau who produced Avatar and The Way of Water also produce this instalment.
Fire and Ash held its Hollywood premiere at the Dolby Theatre on December 1, 2025 to glowing reviews. With a reported $400 million budget, industry insiders project that, like its predecessors, the film could surpass the billion-dollar mark at the global box office. Awards season also appears promising, with the film earning two Golden Globe nominations, including Best Original Song for “Dream as One,” performed by Grammy-winning artiste Miley Cyrus.
Avatar: Fire and Ash will be distributed by 20th Century Studios.
