Biopic on Funmilayo Ransome-Kuti to Hit Cinemas on May 17

The biopic “Funmilayo Ransome-Kuti,” which tells the story of the renowned feminist and activist, is scheduled for nationwide cinema release on May 17, 2024, following a well-received limited screening in 2023.

 

Directed by Bolanle Austen Peters, the film chronicles the life of Funmilayo Ransome-Kuti, the mother of the legendary musician Fela Anikulapo-Kuti. The movie explores Ransome-Kuti’s journey, from being the first female student at Abeokuta Grammar School to her union with Israel Ransome-Kuti and their joint efforts in opposing injustice and founding the Abeokuta Women’s Union.

 

The film’s impressive cast includes veteran actress Joke Silva, as well as Kehinde Bankole and Adunni Ade, who brings Ransome-Kuti’s remarkable story to life. The movie also features performances by Iyimide Ayo-Olumoko, Ibrahim Suleiman, and Iremide Adeoye.

 

The film’s initial limited release in September 2023 at the Silverbird Cinema in Victoria Island, Lagos, garnered praise from the Anikulapo-Kuti family and paved the way for the upcoming nationwide premiere.

 

“Funmilayo Ransome-Kuti” has already received recognition, winning two prestigious awards at the Africa International Film Festival (AFRIFF) for Best Overall Feature Film and Best Screenplay.

 

While biographical films, or biopics, are relatively rare in Nollywood, the industry has gained mass appeal for its diverse offerings, including comedies, dramas, and thrillers. The impending broad release of “Funmilayo Ransome-Kuti” showcases the growing interest in celebrating the lives of influential Nigerians through the power of filmmaking.
