The historical drama highlights African resistance and cultural identity across continents.
“Ireke: Rise of the Maroons,” the directorial debut of Emmy-nominated BBC journalist Gbolahan Peter Macjob, is set to open in cinemas on July 25, 2025.
The historical drama follows the 18th-century Caribbean slave rebellions that led to the formation of the Maroons—a group of formerly enslaved Africans who secured their freedom through sustained resistance and later negotiated a truce.

Starring Tobi Bakre, Bolanle Ninalowo, Fathia Balogun, and Peter Fatomilola, the film features a large ensemble cast that also includes Kola Ajeyemi, Yemi Shodimu, Femi Branch, Mofe Duncan, Atlanta Bridget Johnson, and Okusanya Lolade. British actors Demetrin Turin and Alex Franklyn make their Nollywood debut in the film.
“Ireke” is produced by BUFF Studios and Afristar Studios. It blends Yoruba language and Caribbean influences to tell a cross-continental story about African identity and survival.
Following its 2025 premiere at the Cannes Film Festival, the film will be released in more than 100 cinemas across Nigeria, the United Kingdom, Ghana, Benin Republic, and Austria—a first for a Nigerian historical drama.

“Ireke: Rise of the Maroons” opens nationwide on July 25.
