Life in Plastic? It’s Fantastic! Barbie is Hitting Theatres July 21
Mattel’s Barbie is the most famous doll on the planet, and she is (finally) getting her own live-action film thanks to Warner Bros. Pictures. The film is directed by Little Women’s Greta Gerwig. It has been in the works since 2016 and was originally slated to debut much earlier, but due to a change in cast, scheduling conflicts, and creative differences, the film was pushed forward till July 21, 2023. Margot Robbie is set to take the mantle as the titular character and Ryan Gosling will play her doting boyfriend, Ken.
Joining them is a stellar cast of familiar faces in Hollywood like Will Ferrell, Simu Liu, America Ferrera, Issa Rae, Ncuti Gatwa, Dua Lipa, Emma Mackey, Kingsley Ben-Adir, Scott Evans, Helen Mirren, Sharon Rooney, and Kate McKinnon. Fans have praised the film for its all-inclusive and diverse cast, a criterion for every good Hollywood film.
There has been a lot of mystery surrounding the film’s plot but the chatter around town is that it follows Barbie’s experience in the human world after being banished from Barbieland for not being a perfect doll. She struggles to adapt to life in the human world with Ken, but they have fantastic adventures together and make friends along the way.
“The Movie Event of the Summer,” as it has been so fondly called, has started strong with the release of singles from the soundtrack: Barbie: The Album. So far, songs by Dua Lipa, Nicki Minaj, Ice Spice, Karol G, Charli XCX, and PinkPantheress have dropped and are doing well on the Billboard Charts. The official album will premiere on Jul.21 along with the film. Mark Ronson and Andrew Wyatt will handle the film’s score.
