It is Valentine’s Day, and apart from it being the perfect opportunity for partners and individuals to celebrate and express love, the occasion is the perfect avenue to enjoy alone times with people they care about, and what better way to share these moments than binging on movies that amplifies our moods during this season.

‘Namaste Wahala’

 

Namaste Wahala

Released on Netflix on 14 February 2021, Namaste Wahala, translating to  “Hello Trouble” is Nigeria’s first cross-cultural romantic comedy film.  Written and directed by Hamisha Daryani Ahuja, the movie stars Ini Dima-Okojie and Ruslaan Mumtaz, Brodda Shaggi, Richard Mofe-Damijo, and Joke Silva is produced by Forever 7 Entertainment and runs for 106 minutes.

 

The film is based on a romantic relationship between an Indian man and a Nigerian woman, which is hampered by their different backgrounds, families, and cultures. The movie was globally streamed via Netflix on 14 February 2021, which coincided with the Valentine’s Day celebrations.

‘Tango with Me’

Tango with Me is a 2010 Nigerian romantic drama film which navigates the story of a newly married couple, and how they journey through self-discovery and healing. This process is compiled with their trauma of dealing with the aftermath of an event that leaves a mark on their lives, which happened on their wedding night.

 

The film was written by Femi Kayode, produced and directed by Mahmood Ali-Balogun and it stars Genevieve Nnaji, Joseph Benjamin, and Joke Silva. The film was produced by  Brickwall Communications LTD and Jungle FilmWorks and was produced on a budget of ₦100 million. The movie is currently streaming on Netflix.

‘Dear Affy’

 

Dear Affy

Released in 2020, this film is a Nigerian rom-com that explores the story of a new couple who are dealing with career complications and faithfulness in marriage. Written and directed by Samuel Olatunji, the cast ensemble of the movie includes popular film stars like Toyin Abraham, Enyinna Nwigwe, Kehinde Bankole, and Odunlade Adekola in the lead roles. The film also had its theatrical release on 14 February 2020 coinciding with Valentine’s Day and could be streamed on Netflix.

‘Kambili: The Whole 30 Yards’

 

Kambili

In Kambili: The Whole 30 Yards, a young lady decides to change her behavior and character in determination to win back her ex-boyfriend. However, in her quest romance took over, and she succumbs to a relationship with her longtime best friend.

 

Written by Ozioma Ogbaji and directed by Kayode Kasum, the stars Nancy Isime and Jide Kene Achufusi in the lead roles, while Uzor Arukwe, Toyin Abraham, Venita Akpofure, and Mawuli Gavor are cast in the movie.

 

Produced in collaboration between FilmOne Entertainment, Empire Entertainment, and Huahua Media in 2020, the movie is available to stream on Netflix.

‘Hey You’

 

Hey You

‘Hey You’ is a movie produced by Anthill Production Studios and directed by Uyoyou Adia. It is about a young tech bro addicted to porn and frequently visits Fans Alone, a website where he meets online sex workers for satisfaction. However, he finds out that he has fallen for his next-door neighbor Bianca (Efe Irele), and is his favorite sex worker on the erotic website.

 

The movie stars actors including Timini Egbuson, Efe Irele, Temitope Olowoniyan, Rotimi Salami, Miriam Peters, and Seyi Awolowo. Released in July, 2022, it is available on Prime Video and cinemas nationwide.

‘Flower Girl’

 

Flower Girl

Flower Girl is a 2013 Nigerian romantic comedy film set and shot in Lagos, Nigeria, about a young florist who after she gets dumped by her boyfriend on the her wedding day, she sets out to win him back with help from a handsome actor.

 

Produced by Michelle Bello and Michelle Dede, the movie stars Damilola Adegbite, Chris Attoh, Blossom Chukwujekwu, Eku Edewor, Bikiya Graham-Douglas and Patrick Doyle. Distributed by Blu Star Entertainment and Talking Drum Entertainment, it was released on the 14th of February, 2013 and is screening on Netflix.

‘Kasanova’

 

Kasanova

This movie explores the story of a male protagonist (Wale Ojo) who finds love in his middle age, after a despairing episode of being wifeless. He later falls for an equally middle-aged woman (Ireti Doyle), his son’s music teacher.

 

The movie is directed by Oluseyi Amuwa and produced by Fojo Media. It stars Wale Ojo, Iretiola Doyle and Toyin Abraham in the lead roles, and it premiered at the Filmhouse Cinema on 11 September 2019.
