The upcoming war film, “The Six Triple Eight,” will premiere on Dec. 20, 2024 on Netflix.
Before its global release, it will have a limited theatrical run starting on Dec. 6.
Directed and produced by Tyler Perry, the film is based on a 2019 article written by Kevin M Hymel for the World War II History Magazine on the brave exploits of the 6888th Central Post Directory Batallion—the first and only all-Black, all-female battalion deployed overseas during World War II.
The film shines a light on these women who not only boosted morale on the front lines but also fought for equality at a dark time in history when being Black and being a woman in America was seen as double jeopardy.
The film stars Kerry Washington as Major Charity Adams, leading a group of trailblazing women who overcame gender and racial bias to process a three-year backlog of undelivered mail to US soldiers.
Joining Washington in this journey through archival history are Sam Waterson, Susan Sarandon, Oprah Winfrey, Ebony Obsidian, Milauna Jackson, Kylie Jefferson, Shanice Shantay, Sarah Jeffery, Pepi Sonugam Jay Reeves, Jeante Golock, Moriah Brown, Gregg Sulkin, Baadja-Lyne Odums, and Dean Norris.
“The Six Triple Eight” is part of Perry’s multi-year, first-look film deal with Netflix. It allows him to write, direct, and produce original films and series for the streaming giant. Thus far, the thriller “Mea Culpa” and the drama series “Beauty in Black” have been released to critical acclaim.
The next film on Perry’s release roster is rumored to be “Straw.”
