Uduak Obong Patrick’s “The Masked King”, a groundbreaking epic, is set to premiere in cinemas nationwide on March 28, 2025.

The film follows the ascension of a king and the far-reaching impact of his rule on his people.

In an exclusive interview with The Nollywood Reporter, Patrick shared insights into the production, revealing that filming took place in January 2023 across various locations in Cross River, including its remote areas.

“The original palace of King Eyo Honesty II was restored for us to film this project,” Patrick disclosed. “History notes that he worked closely with Mary Slessor to stop the killing of twins among the Efik people. A lot of work went into restoring the palace and other set pieces, adding a level of authenticity to the film.”

He described the filming experience as both challenging and rewarding. “There was a lot of adventure while filming; it was a beautiful experience shooting at Agbokim Waterfalls—one of Nigeria’s major tourist attractions,” he reminisced. “We had to wrap up before 6 p.m. when the waterway closes. Some days, we filmed overnight, and though it was exhausting, we had fun. I wouldn’t trade the experience for anything.”

On what sets “The Masked King” apart from other Nollywood historical epics, Patrick explained, “The film explores a different culture. Most epics focus on the Yoruba or Igbo people, but we chose to highlight the rich traditions of the Efiks, ensuring historical accuracy in the process.”

He also noted the film’s academic relevance. “This film serves as a resource for students of history, film, and theatre. We delved into the lives of historical figures, including Mary Slessor. I can’t wait to see the audience’s reaction to what we’ve created.”

“The Masked King” features a stellar cast, with actors undergoing intensive training in the Efik language to enhance authenticity. The ensemble includes Daniel Etim Effiong, Shaffy Bello, Uche Montana, Gideon Okeke, Uzor Arukwe, Segun Arinze, Jude Chukwuka, Jenny Stead, and Bernard Raubenheimer.

Produced by Fito Fili Films and The 7eventh Studio, “The Masked King” promises to be a compelling addition to Nollywood’s growing repertoire of epic films.
