For decades, Nigerian beauty queens have used pageantry as a route into careers that extend beyond the competition stage.

Miss World’s Beauty With a Purpose initiative, introduced in 1972, has made humanitarian work a central part of the competition. The organization says contestants have established projects in 142 countries, giving participants a platform to work on issues affecting their communities.

Nigeria has also maintained a long relationship with international pageantry. The country’s pageant history includes the Miss Nigeria competition, which began in 1957, and the Most Beautiful Girl in Nigeria (MBGN) competition, whose winners have represented Nigeria at major international contests.

For some Nigerian contestants, the exposure has opened doors in fashion and entertainment. Others have moved into business, advocacy, public service, and other professional fields.

1. Agbani Darego (MBGN 2001)

Agbani Darego remains Nigeria’s most prominent Miss World titleholder. In 2001, she became the first Black African woman to win the Miss World crown in Sun City, South Africa.

Before and after her pageant victory, Darego built an international modelling career, working with major fashion and beauty brands and appearing in publications including Vogue.

She later moved into fashion entrepreneurship with AD by Agbani Darego, a denim and lifestyle brand. She was also conferred with the Member of the Order of the Federal Republic (MFR).

Darego has largely maintained a private life away from the spotlight while continuing her work in fashion and business.

2. Tamunosoye Karibi-George (Miss World Nigeria 2026)

Tamunosoye Karibi-George became Miss World Nigeria in June 2026, succeeding Joy Mojisola Raimi. The 26-year-old communications professional represented Bayelsa State at the national competition.

At the 2026 Miss World Festival in Vietnam, Karibi-George won the Africa Top Model title, earning an automatic place in the Top 40. She later advanced to the Top 12 at the global final.

4. Nyekachi Douglas (MBGN 2019)

Ugochi Ihezue represented Nigeria at Miss World 2017, where she reached the Top 15. She also won the Miss World Top Model competition, securing an automatic place in the next stage of the global contest.

She later became a lawyer and politician and served as a member of Nigeria’s House of Representatives. Her official biography identifies her as a former model and politician with degrees in communications, business administration, and law.

Her career remains one of the clearest examples of a Nigerian beauty queen moving from pageantry into politics.
