December in Lagos is a season of energy, events, and entertainment, particularly for Nollywood fans. Known as Detty December, the month is filled with end-of-year parties, art exhibitions, concerts, and film premieres. It is also a time when Nigerians living abroad, sometimes called IJGBs, return home for the holidays.

Last year’s notable releases included Christmas in Lagos by Jade Osiberu, A Danfo Christmas by Sebastian Ukwa, and Funke Akindele’s Everybody Loves Jenifa. This year promises a range of options. Funke Akindele will release Behind the Scenes, while other titles include Niyi Akinmolayan’s fantasy Colours of Fire, Toyin Abraham’s comedy Oversabi Aunty, Wale Ojo’s This Isn’t a Nollywood Movie, and Ini Edo’s thriller A Very Dirty Christmas. Additional films, including rom-com and holiday-themed releases, are expected on cinema screens, streaming platforms, and YouTube.

Here are some tips to make the most of Nollywood’s Detty December:

Prepare for December Blockbusters

December is busy for film releases. Plan a budget based on the screenings you want to attend and keep an eye out for new releases throughout the month. With at least four confirmed films, audiences may want to schedule their viewing in advance.

Dress for the Occasion

Fashion is an important part of the season. Whether attending premieres, parties, or sharing moments on social media, dressing well adds to the experience. Consider planning your outfits in advance to match the festive atmosphere.

Plan Accommodation and Transportation

For those traveling to Lagos or relying on public transport, accommodation and travel arrangements should be considered early. Sharing a place or travel with friends can reduce costs and make experiences more enjoyable.

Host a Nollywood-Themed Party

Fans can celebrate with themed parties inspired by iconic Nigerian films and personalities. Activities may include dressing as favorite characters, recreating memorable scenes, and curating music from Nollywood films. Outdoor venues, including beaches, are popular choices.

Enjoy the Season

Above all, December is a time to relax and enjoy yourself. Spending time with family and friends is as important as attending events or screenings. Planning is helpful, but the main goal is to have fun and celebrate the year.

Detty December continues to offer Nollywood fans in Lagos a mix of films, events, and cultural experiences. With careful planning, audiences can enjoy the season to the fullest.
