Competition has always been part of popular music. In Nigeria, it has sometimes developed into public rivalries that extend beyond songs and into interviews, social media and business disputes.
Some have been driven largely by fan comparisons, while others have involved genuine disagreements between artistes, collaborators and former group members.
Over the years, these conflicts have produced diss tracks, public call-outs, temporary reconciliations and, in some cases, legal battles.
Here are some of the most notable rivalries to emerge from Nigerian music.
Wizkid and Davido
The rivalry between Wizkid and Davido has become one of the most persistent debates in Nigerian popular music, with their respective fanbases, Wizkid FC and 30BG, often intensifying the competition between them.
The relationship between the two stars has shifted repeatedly over the years, moving between public collaborations and gestures of goodwill and periods of online confrontation.
In 2024, the rivalry resurfaced dramatically on social media, with both artistes exchanging insults on X. Wizkid made several posts about Davido, while Davido responded with his own comments about Wizkid.
The episode revived years of debate around their respective careers, international success and influence within Nigerian music.
Their relationship has never followed a straightforward path, making their rivalry as much a story of changing relationships as competition between two of Afrobeats' biggest stars.
Olamide and Don Jazzy
The 2015 Headies Awards remains one of the most memorable moments in the history of Nigerian music awards.
The tension centred on the Next Rated category, which was won by Mavin artiste Reekado Banks over YBNL's Lil Kesh.
Olamide took the stage after the announcement and publicly backed Lil Kesh, famously saying, “Leave trash for LAWMA,” before leaving the stage with members of his YBNL team.
Don Jazzy responded shortly afterwards, telling Olamide to “come and take” the car that accompanied the award before also leaving the stage.
The confrontation continued online, but the rivalry did not last indefinitely. In 2015, businessman Aliko Dangote reportedly brought the two label heads together, after which they publicly reconciled.
The episode remains one of the most discussed clashes involving Nigerian record-label executives and artistes.
M.I Abaga and Vector
Unlike several Afrobeats rivalries, the long-running tension between M.I Abaga and Vector developed within Nigerian hip-hop.
After years of subliminal shots and competition, the dispute became explicit in 2019 when M.I addressed Vector on the “Martell Cypher 2.”
Vector responded with “The Purge” and later “Tetracycline,” while M.I followed with “The Viper.” Vector then released “Judas the Rat.”
The exchange became one of the most closely followed rap battles in contemporary Nigerian hip-hop, with both rappers addressing questions of credibility, leadership and their respective places within the genre.
The rivalry eventually moved towards reconciliation. In 2020, the two appeared together on the finale of the YouTube series The Conversation and later collaborated on “Crown of Clay.”
Odumodublvck and Blaqbonez
The relationship between Odumodublvck and Blaqbonez began largely through the kind of competitive banter that is common among Nigerian artistes online.
However, their dispute became considerably more serious after Odumodublvck made allegations against Blaqbonez on social media. Blaqbonez denied the allegations and subsequently filed a defamation lawsuit against him.
The case turned what had largely been an online rivalry into a legal dispute.
The two artistes have continued to exchange positions publicly, while the legal proceedings have added a different dimension to their relationship.
Ruger and BNXN
Ruger and BNXN's rivalry was driven largely by comparisons between two artistes who emerged prominently during the same period.
Fans frequently debated which artiste represented the stronger new generation of Afrobeats, with the comparisons eventually spilling into direct exchanges between the two musicians.
In 2022, Ruger responded to a fan who compared him with BNXN, arguing that his success had largely come through solo records. BNXN responded with his own jabs.
The rivalry eventually gave way to collaboration. In 2024, the two released “Romeo Must Die (RMD)” before joining forces for the joint EP RnB.
Their story ultimately moved from fan-driven competition to a working musical partnership.
Peter and Paul Okoye
The breakdown of P-Square is one of the most significant disputes in Nigerian pop music because of the duo's history and the scale of their success.
Peter and Paul Okoye built P-Square into one of Africa's biggest musical acts before tensions within the family and business structure surrounding the group led to their first split in 2017.
The brothers reunited in 2021, but the reconciliation eventually broke down again.
Their subsequent disputes have involved allegations concerning business dealings, royalties and the management of P-Square's catalogue. Some of these matters have entered legal proceedings, with the brothers presenting different accounts of the issues between them.
The conflict has continued to affect the legacy of one of Nigeria's most successful musical duos.
2Baba and Blackface
The dispute between 2Baba and Blackface dates back to the breakup of Plantashun Boiz, the group they formed alongside Faze.
At the centre of their long-running disagreement has been “African Queen,” 2Baba's 2004 hit. Blackface has repeatedly claimed that he contributed to the song's writing and has raised questions about the credit and financial benefits attached to it.
The disagreement has produced years of public accusations, legal threats and media exchanges.
There have also been attempts at reconciliation. In 2021, the former bandmates publicly embraced at a tribute concert for Sound Sultan and indicated that they were willing to move past their legal disputes.
The peace did not permanently resolve their differences, however, and disagreements surrounding Plantashun Boiz and their individual careers have continued to resurface.
