Afrobeats Under Fire: Is the Genre Losing its Edge?

There’s a tweet going around that’s stirring an Afrobeat faithful.

“Afrobeats has been going through a weird phase in the past 2 years. So many songs come out every day, but only a few truly resonate,” writes @shizzi on X.

“the decline is crazy, so many songs drop every friday but less than a few have good replay value,” @effizzzyy concurred.

“…we need more timeless vibes, less TikTok bait.”  @Asunsweetj

For @ConifidenceNwezi, it’s the price to pay for going global.

“It’s this “going global” thing. Immediately they just crossover, they start trying to maybe please their abroad audience, and the afrobeat loses its originality.”

@itskingsj blames the Amapiano overdose in a lengthy post:

“What did you expect to happen when every artist wants to infuse AmaPiano to what was already a beautiful sound.

People loved afrobeat because it sounded original and unique. Every artist drew inspiration from their origins…Now every song has logdrums, trying to sound like AmaPiano.”

“3-step AmaPiano is the next wave.. give it 2-3years, Ibiza DJ’s and most house festivals will be playing SA’n music back to back … at that point it’ll take more than another “Davido – Fall” to resurrect afrobeat,” he continued.

The question remains: can Afrobeats reclaim its original soul, or is evolution inevitable?
