Here comes “oxygen”: Chimamanda Adichie is Bespoke

Award-winning author, Chimamanda Adichie delivered a speech at the recent Annual General Meeting of the Nigerian Bar Association that has left her trending on Twitter.

It is no surprise that Adichie is one of Nigeria’s most eloquent intellectuals and she has gotten a chance to prove herself to everyone once more. The meeting took place in Lagos and some notable personalities at the event included former Vice President Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, Presidential Candidate, Peter Obi, and Governor Godwin Obaseki amongst others.

In Adichie’s keynote address, she spoke about the state of the Nigerian economy, stating that Nigeria lacks heroes.

“Nigeria is in disarray,” she said. “Things are hard and getting harder by the day. We can’t be saved when there is no rule of law. Nigerians are starved of heroes to look up to. Late Dora Akunyili and Gani Gawehimmi were heroes that Nigerians looked up to before now. Unfortunately, that era is gone. I believe that NBA is in a position to give the nation heroes that we can look up to to lead the nation.”

Seeing as her speech is currently a trending topic in Nigeria, I guess it is safe to say that it resonated with the youth. Many who are fans of her have tweeted their admiration in support of her. One user said: “Chimamanda is a fierce warrior & a vanguard for all women, a beacon of hope for all humanity. She delivered the most moving speech at the NBA conference. She is my oxygen, her words are eternal & powerful, it’ll continue to shine bright, illuminating all the colours of the rainbow.”

You might think that is a little bit dramatic and you might be right. Either way, Chimamanda Adichie is a fan favorite.
