Rema’s latest single, “Baby (Is it a Crime)”, has set a new Spotify record, becoming the most streamed African song of 2025 within just four days. The track has amassed over 5.4 million streams, further cementing the Afro-rave star’s global influence.
The song samples “Is It a Crime?”, originally released in 1985 by the English band Sade. Known for its vivid storytelling and emotive delivery, the classic track received widespread acclaim upon release and remains a staple in contemporary music discussions.
Rema first teased “Baby (Is it a Crime)” in December 2024 without official promotion, leading to speculation that Sade Adu had not cleared the sample for release. However, the single officially dropped on February 7, 2025, accompanied by a music video.
Marking a departure from the energetic rhythms of “OZEBA” and “MARCH AM”, Rema leans into his R&B influences, blending nostalgia with a contemporary touch. The track showcases his versatility, reinforcing his ability to transcend genre constraints while pushing the boundaries of Afrobeats on the global stage.
