Tyla Wins Favorite Afrobeats Artiste at 2025 AMAs

The South African singer earns her first American Music Award amid a night of standout wins and performances.

Tyla has won the award for Favorite Afrobeats Artiste at the 2025 American Music Awards. The South African singer won the award for, held on May 26 at the Fontainebleau Las Vegas in Nevada.

 

This marks the South African artiste’s first AMA win, beating out fellow nominees Asake, Rema, Tems, and Wizkid—the category’s last winner in 2022.

 

The win adds to Tyla’s growing list of international accolades. In the past year, she has earned a Grammy, the 2024 MTV Video Music Award for Best Afrobeats Video with “Water,” and the 2025 iHeartRadio Music Award for World artiste of the Year. She is also set to host the 2025 Nickelodeon Kids’ Choice Awards in June.

The 2025 AMAs marked the ceremony’s return after a three-year break caused by scheduling conflicts and uncertainty about its future. Jennifer Lopez hosted the event and opened the show with a performance combining classic hits and new releases.

 

Billie Eilish emerged as the night’s biggest winner with seven awards, sweeping every category she was nominated in. Kendrick Lamar led with ten nominations but secured fewer wins. Lady Gaga and Bruno Mars each took home three awards.

 

Other notable moments included Janet Jackson receiving the Icon Award and performing a medley of her classics, and Rod Stewart being honored with the Lifetime Achievement Award. Country artiste Zac Brown received the inaugural Veteran Voice Award for his contributions to U.S. military veterans.

 

First-time AMA winners included Gracie Abrams (Best New artiste), Doechii (Social Song of the Year for “Anxiety”), and BTS member RM, who won Favorite K-Pop artiste—becoming the first Korean rapper to earn the honor.

Performers throughout the night included Blake Shelton, Gwen Stefani, Becky G, Lainey Wilson, Benson Boone, Manuel Turizo, Renee Rapp, Alex Warren, and Gloria Estefan.
