Adaptation of Gabriel Souleyka’s “Akoni Yoruba” Promises A French Toast

An adaptation of Gabriel Souleyka’s novel “Akoni Yoruba” is poised for production.
The upcoming series, titled “La Légende D’Akoni,” invites viewers to explore the heart of 18th-century Dahomey, where themes of courage, resistance, and cultural heritage intersect.
The series adaptation, “La Légende D’Akoni,” unfolds against the backdrop of a heroic village in Dahomey, circa 1772. As clandestine slavers threaten their existence, the villagers rise in defiance.
The teaser episode, named “Zuri,” has already been filmed in Adjohoun, Cotonou, as revealed by Yasmina Fagbemi Edwards, co-founder of Tioleja Films, the New York-based production house behind this project.
“Akoni Yoruba” follows the story of a boy named Akoni, residing in Benin with his father, the King. Facing a rite of passage to become a man and a worthy son, Akoni’s destiny takes an unforeseen turn when he is sold into slavery in Saint-Domingue.
Determined to return home, Akoni resists his fate. Akoni, the valiant protagonist, embodies resilience, hope, and the fight for dignity and freedom.
The full eight-episode series is scheduled to commence filming this summer in Benin, promising an immersive experience for audiences. Watch the teaser here.
