The 2024 Billboard Music Awards (BBMAs) continues to celebrate African excellence as Afrobeats stars secure key nominations.
The annual event, which recognizes chart achievements across Billboard’s metrics, will take place on December 12, 2024, hosted by comedian and actress Michelle Buteau. The ceremony will livestream performances via Billboard’s website and social media platforms.
While the performers lineup is still being finalized, Shaboozey has been confirmed as the first act for the ceremony.
Grammy Award-winner Tems leads the Nigerian contingent with two nominations in the Top Afrobeats Artiste and Top Afrobeats Song categories, making her the most nominated Nigerian artiste this year. Fellow stars Asake, Rema, and Burna Boy also earned nods in the Top Afrobeats Artiste category, further showcasing the genre’s global influence.
South African sensation Tyla leads the African nominees with an impressive eight nods, spanning R&B and Afrobeats categories. This makes her the most-nominated African artiste in BBMAs history. Her chart-topping hits—”Water”, “Truth or Dare”, and “Jump” featuring Gunna and Skillibeng—have all been nominated for Top Afrobeats Song.
On the broader stage, country artiste Zach Bryan leads with 18 nominations, followed by Taylor Swift with 16, Morgan Wallen with 13, and recent Grammy nominee Sabrina Carpenter with nine.
The BBMAs honor artistes based on measurable achievements like sales, streams, and radio airplay. This year’s nominations highlight Afrobeats’ expanding global reach, as African artistes continue to break records and push boundaries in the international music scene.
